NATIONAL TRUST MEMBERSHIP
After being gifted a National Trust membership for Christmas, I have since been on a mission to tick off as many locations as I can before the year is up. As someone who has always loved history, visiting places that have an eclectic background is my idea of heaven. I’ll be sharing my favourite places with you here on this blog!
CROOME’S HISTORY
Croome is no stranger to interesting history. It was the brainchild of eccentric trendsetter George William, 6th Earl of Coventry, who threw his fashionable all into the extensive works that took place in the court and the surrounding grounds in the 18th century. It was throughout history visited by King George III, Queen Victoria and King George V. It also housed the Dutch Royal family who were escaping Nazi occupation during the second world war. During this time the grounds were also home to a secret RAF airbase. After the Coventry family sold the property, it became a Hare Krishna community ashram in the 1970’s and housed many devotees. This interesting history of the Croome is still clearly evident today. From the colourful influence the Hare Krishna devotees left behind to original features and artwork from George William’s time, there is a surprise around every corner. Today different artists exhibit at the house to pay homage to Croom’s colourful history.
