A RURAL OFF-GRID GLAMPING ESCAPE AT CROWDY HALL, DURHAM UK
At Crowdy Hall, you’ll find a rural off-grid retreat featuring bespoke, hand-crafted cabins, each offering a secluded escape in the open countryside of County Durham. We took a trip up last autumn and stayed here for a couple days to relax and recharge after a busy summer. The family behind Crowdy Hall created these cabins with peace and rest in mind, with the freedom to explore the surrounding countryside. We opted to stay in Tawny Hide, perhaps Crowdy Hall’s most luxurious cabin, though whichever accommodation you go for, a peaceful break away from the hustle and bustle of daily life is guaranteed. The cabins are completely off-grid, so you won’t find much more than 12v power and the opportunity to spend some time away from the screens. Instead, spend a while on the wraparound deck, light up the firepit and watch the sunset over the rolling countryside. You’ll find there’s really no need to leave the site when there’s access to so much countryside from the doorstep, however the coast is a mere 30 minutes away and the nearby village of Sedgefield is picturesque with endless cafe’s for a spot of lunch. There’s 4 different cabins on site, but each is perfectly secluded.
TAWNY HIDE, CROWDY HALL
Named after the tawny owls that can be found in the area, Tawny Hide was our cabin of choice. We picked this one as we were totally drawn in by the wood-fired bath tub on the decking and because it’s the most secluded of the cabins. When we weren’t dipping in the tub or toasting marshmallows on the firepit, we were huddled up inside around the log-burner and appreciating the views of the rolling hills through the window. Despite being off-grid, the guys at Crowdy Hall have thought of everything to make your stay as relaxing as possible. The king-size bed is super cosy ready for an excellent nights sleep. There is a little kitchen in Tawny Hide that features an LPG gas powered hob, a kettle and a cafetiere along with cooking utensils and crockery for two. A coolbox is also provided to keep your food cool and a fold-out table for dining. The bathroom includes a hot shower with fluffy towels provided and an incinerating loo (which I promise is way less scary than it sounds!) The cabin stays super cosy and warm thanks to a log-burner inside that we made full use of. We were provided with everything we could have possibly needed for a couple of days of relaxation and it goes to show that off-grid doesn’t need to be basic. We loved our stay, it was the perfect antidote to a busy and chaotic summer.
